During a hike in the remote Rattle Snake Canyon in western Colorado, I photographed the wind eroded sandstone arches locally known as Rattle Snake Arches.
The landscape in Rattle Snake Canyon is arid and is known for its colorful sandstone formations and steep walled canyon's. To the avid back-country hiker in Colorado, Rattle Snake Canyon is especially unique because it features more naturally formed arches than any other area in the United States including Arches National Park in Utah.
In 2002, after completing courses in digital image manipulation, I returned to the negatives with a fresh approach. Using high-resolution scans, digital manipulations and repeating tile formations, I had created an image that no longer depicted a traditional view of the western landscape, rather, the alteration unmasked the unexpected faces and forms in Rattle Snake Canyon.
